Pushing Boundaries: Eight Exciting EV Innovations at SEMA 2024

SEMA, held every year in Las Vegas, is the ultimate showcase for the latest trends and innovations in the automotive aftermarket world. The 2024  show highlighted just how exciting the future of customization and electrification is becoming. Here are eight standout innovations that stole the spotlight at this year’s event.

Formosa EV VCU

Formosa EV turned heads at SEMA 2024 with its cutting-edge Vehicle Control Unit (VCU), earning the prestigious “Best New EV Product” award for its versatility and performance in EV customization. Designed to simplify complex EV builds, the Formosa EV VCU integrates seamlessly with a wide range of components, making it a go-to solution for restomods and unique conversions like electric dune buggies. Developed in partnership with Motivo Engineering, this award-winning VCU offers advanced customization options, ensuring precise control over power delivery and system integration.

HP Tuners CORE EV VCU

HP Tuners showcased its groundbreaking CORE EV Vehicle Control Unit (VCU) installed in an electrified 1984 Porsche 911 Carrera built in collaboration with Legacy EV. The white 911, now an 800-volt electric powerhouse delivering 635 horsepower, served as the ultimate testbed for CORE EV, designed to streamline EV conversions with its robust, intuitive control system. Featuring Cascadia Motion’s iDM-375SiC drive module and a custom 76.5kWh battery pack, the Porsche highlights the CORE EV’s ability to integrate seamlessly with advanced aftermarket setups. This innovative VCU, purpose-built for high-performance EVs, represents a pivotal step in mainstream acceptance of the EV aftermarket.

Plymouth GTX Electromod Concept

Unveiled at SEMA 2024, the 1967 Plymouth GTX Electromod Concept redefines classic muscle with a bold, zero-emissions future in mind. Highlighting Mopar’s vision for eCrate propulsion, this electric restomod features a 400-volt, 250-kilowatt drive module delivering 335 horsepower and a 250-mile range. Sleek Frostbite Blue paint, satin black accents, and custom carbon fiber elements merge heritage with modern aesthetics, while a reworked interior offers bespoke craftsmanship, including IndiGo Blue leather seats and a unique driver interface. The 73kWh battery system balances performance and weight distribution, making this a cutting-edge showcase for enthusiasts aiming to electrify vintage icons.

Fellten NACS Port

Fellten Systems made waves in debuting the first aftermarket NACS (North American Charging Standard) port for DC fast charging, marking a significant milestone for EV conversions. With NACS rapidly becoming the industry standard has been adopted  by major automakers for its compact design and seamless compatibility with Tesla’s expansive charging network. This innovation represents a game-changer for retrofitting classic vehicles. Unlike the bulkier CCS port, the smaller size of the NACS connector allows for easier integration into vintage cars, often fitting directly into the original fuel filler location without disrupting the vehicle’s aesthetic.

Electrogenic E-Type Crate

Electrogenic brought timeless elegance to SEMA 2024 with its Jaguar E-Type electric conversion kit, showcased on a stunning 1966 Series 1 roadster. This reversible EV conversion preserves the E-Type’s iconic design while delivering modern performance with a 275-horsepower motor and 120kWh of battery capacity for smooth acceleration and a serene driving experience. The clean, compact integration of the drivetrain fits seamlessly into the classic frame, maintaining the original aesthetic. The kit and the project highlight the fact that EV conversions are becoming more accessible and appealing to vintage car enthusiasts worldwide.

reVolt Systems Divorced Inverter Kit

reVolt Systems unveiled its innovative LDU Remote Mount Inverter Kit at the show, revolutionizing the fitment of the popular Tesla Model S Large Drive Unit (LDU) in challenging aftermarket applications. This American-made solution, crafted from high-quality billet aluminum, enables placement of the inverter separate from the motor, making EV conversions viable for front-wheel-drive setups or vehicles with narrow tracks where original LDU form would be restrictive. Additionally,  reVolt debuted a new sequential transmission option for its standard crate motor, providing enthusiasts with enhanced control and performance.

1973 Ferrari Dino EV

Current Electric Vehicles of Los Angeles made history at SEMA 2024, taking Top 3 in the Sport Compact, Import Performance, Luxury & Exotic category of the prestigious Battle of the Builders with its r 1973 Ferrari Dino EV—the first time a converted EV has ranked this high. This reimagined classic pairs the soul of a vintage Ferrari with cutting-edge electric performance, offering a 45kWh battery system for a 200-mile range. Meticulous customizations, including Italian leather interiors, billet wheels inspired by Campagnolo designs, and a stainless steel impact-absorbing battery enclosure, highlight the seamless blend of heritage and innovation. This groundbreaking build cements the potential of electrified classics in the world of high-performance automotive artistry.

Ampere EV Atom Drive Installation

Ampere EV and Legacy EV showcased the future of EV conversions at SEMA 2024 with a live installation of the Atom Drive System in a Factory Five 818 kit car at Legacy EV’s booth. This hands-on demonstration highlighted the ease of installing Ampere’s modular, OEM-grade EV powertrain. The exoskeleton design of the 818 chassis provided an ideal platform to showcase the Atom Drive’s comprehensive components, including its Maverick 25 Drive Module and DC-fast charging capabilities. Ampere’s partnership with Legacy EV also emphasizes training, with courses designed to help installers master Atom Drive installations and accelerate adoption across the industry.
