ERANGE EV Tires Tested on a 2015 Tesla Model 3: Do They Really Make a Difference?

Do EV Tires Really Make a Difference?

Can a different brand of tire make an EV ride more smoothly, perform better, and reduce noise? Seems too good to be true, right? That’s exactly what we thought, so we put a set to the test on our 2015 Tesla Model 3.

The tires of choice for this test are the new ERANGE EV tires from Sailun Tires. After ordering a set of these unique tires to replace our original Michelin tires, we took a ride and performed a couple of shade tree mechanic-style tests with a downloadable DB meter app. We also used our personal internal vibration sensors that never fail on tests like these. This gave us a chance, too, to break out our new Wiha Tools EV-specific toolset, which will protect us from up to 1,000 volts of unwanted electricity.

ERANGE EV tires are designed to reduce rolling resistance, which in turn helps to increase the range of the EV. Its high-efficiency design not only improves the overall driving experience, but also reduces “range anxiety” for drivers. These tires feature increased load-bearing capacity to account for the extra weight of vehicle batteries while also utilizing a reinforced sidewall design for crisp handling and cornering compared to traditional tires.

Developed by Sailun Tire through the use of proprietary EcoPoint3 technology, ERANGE EV is the first dedicated electric vehicle tire lineup specifically designed, constructed, and tested for EV applications. As more and more vehicle manufacturers offer additional electric car, truck, and SUV options, the need for tires that enhance EV performance, help increase range, and also deliver a quiet and comfortable driver experience has never been greater. All this is great information to know—but now it’s time for some testing!

Our 2015 Tesla Model 3 originally came with Michelin tires that had around 32,000 miles. Rotating them often helped these tires last this long, but the time has come to swap them out.
Before removing the old tires, we wanted to test the current engine noise in the car while driving. We drove very conservatively and hit a decibel level of 82.
ERANGE EV tires are designed to reduce rolling resistance, which helps increase EV range to get you farther.

ERANGE EV tires use advanced tread patterns and specially formulated rubber compounds to handle the instant torque of electric vehicles and deliver dynamic driving performance in various road conditions.
With the wheels off, we took the time to check the brakes on this Tesla. It’s nice to see the regenerative breaking doing its job, because these brakes are in great shape!
ERANGE EV tires are manufactured with liquid phase mixing EcoPoint3 technology to deliver the right balance of long-lasting tire life without sacrificing grip or traction on various wet and dry road surfaces.
Grabbing any off-the-shelf tool is not going to cut it when servicing electric vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles, or battery electric vehicles. Safety must be the top priority. Developed with input from the leaders in OEM electric vehicles, the 26-piece Wiha Insulated EV Essentials Tool Kit has the tools you need to get the job done. The kit also gives you peace of mind as you’re using individually tested, 1,000-volt-rated tools.
Wiha insulated tools are VDE-certified and meet EN/IEC 60900 testing standards for protection against arc flash explosion, ASTM F1505 standard specifications for insulated and insulating hand tools, NFPA-70E standards for electrical safety on the job site, and CSA testing benchmarks for safety and performance. You can trust the Wiha EV products for your specialized automotive mechanic needs.

Insulated VDE screwdrivers, sockets, ratchets, extension bars, wrenches, pliers, cutters, cable stripping knife, and tweezers are 1,000-volt rated. Always remember to wear your  1,000-volt rated gloves when using these tools.
Wow we are SHOCKED! We went the same speed on the same roads with the same payload and we are down 14 decibels! Very impressive—and on top of that, we really feel the difference since changing the tires.
